Looking for information on Arthur Frederick Martin, son of Albert Martin and Eliza Jennings, born 16 August 1888 in Burlington, Newfoundland. He married Juanita Clara Roberts, daughter of Elias L. Roberts and Ellen Andrews, on 31 May 1914 in Burlington. Juanita was born on 7 August 1895 in North West Arm.

Arthur and Juanita had at least two children:
Ellen Gladys H Martin was born on 21 November 1918.
Florence Martin was born about 1920.

The family moved to the Toronto, Ontario area.

I have a Albert Martin ( I have his birth date as oct 1913)in my tree from Burlington, but I don't have his spouse, however I do have his parents. they were Edward Martin and Harriet Elizabeth Roberts. I also have an Elais Roberts with no spouse. Don't know if this is the same Albert , But there must be a conection there.If you think there is please contact me. I don't have a whole lot on the Martins , but I do have a bit on the Roberts.

Looks like it is a different Albert. My Albert was born in 1864. His parents were Frederick Martin and Mary Ann King.

I have your Albert, born Oct 1913, in my database but all I have is from the 1921 census which list his parents and siblings.

I think your Albert is the Uncle of my Albert. I have an Edwin Martin (b.1864)who is the Father of my Albert, whose parents are Frederick Martin and a Mary Ann Unknowen. But it is Edwin who married into my family so there is no conection to your Albert for me.

I was wondering about the Elais Roberts you have in your tree , do you have his parents or anything on him? I have two in my tree , one with no info other than his parents , siblings and his birth which was 1867 in Twillingate.

I have Edwin Martin, son of Frederick Martin and Mary Young, born 15 September 1881 in Burlington (Northwest Arm at that time). He is a half brother to my Albert Martin (born 6 May 1864) who married Eliza Jennings. Edwin mother was Mary Young and Albert's mother was Mary Ann King.


I have a number of Elias Roberts....
1) Elias and Etenora Roberts had a son John Roberts born 29 Oct 1885
2)Elias Roberts - son of Robert Roberts (1786-1867) and Kezia Anstey (1793-1862)
3) Elias Roberts born 28 July 1844 son of Thomas and Jane Roberts
4) Elias L Roberts - father of Jeanetta Clara Roberts who was born on 17 August 1895
5) Elias Pearce Roberts born 5 Sept 1874 died 27 Feb 1964, son of James Robers and Sarah Ann Pearce. This Elias married Caroline (Carrie) Waterman and had four children.

wanda, i owe you an email...you contacted me about the jennings/mills of northwest arm/burlington. i'll get around to it soon...i'm battling back problems now and can't sit for long.

but i just noticed this thread about frederick martin and elias roberts.

i know frederick martin was married 3 times... 1st wife ann(unknown). 2nd wife mary ann(1841-1875) they married in 1873...i see you listed her surname as king. where did you get that bit of info? 3rd wife mary young(m.1880).

in my records, children albert, edwin tregertha and alberta were children of his first wife because he didn't marry his second wife mary ann until 1873. a son alexander was born in 1875. i assume that this was the only child born to fred and mary ann as she died in 1875, age 35.

this edwin martin married into my Lush family, marrying my great aunt caroline in 1906 as his 3rd wife. his 4th wife was harriett elizabeth roberts (of samuel and sarah). this is where the ablert b.1913 comes into play. they are listed in the 1921 census for burlington. throughout the 4 marriage records for this edwin martin, he lists his age different in each. i have him born 1867 (per old birth records for this district).

the elias roberts in the 1921 census was married to a mary ellen fifield. this elias was the son of josiah roberts sr. josiah, sr., came to northwest arm from twillingate and pioneered in the sawmill indusrty along with two of his sons, william and elias. they had both a steam mill and a water mill near the northwest river. the daughter of elias was juanita clara roberts, b.1895, (not JEANETTA as stated) who married arthur martin.

hope some of this helps. by the way, i live in burlington, once known as northwest arm. anyone can ask me a question about the history here as i am currently putting together the families of the old land grants. i,too, have many questions left unanswered, as yet ,and would appreciate help.

No I don't have a Joseph Martin as the son of Albert Martin and Eliza Jennings. I only have three children for this couple:
Mary Ann born 1 November 1886 - she died shortly after birth and was buried on 4 Nov 1886 in Burlington
Arthur Frederick born 16 Aug 1888 married Juanita Roberts and moved to the Toronto area.
Theodore William born 7 June 1889 - after the death of his mother he went to live with his mother's sister Jane in Twillingate. I don't know when or where he died.

So can you tell me more about Joseph Martin.

I rechecked my information on Frederick Martin. I have three marriages for him as well.

1) Ann - Frederick and Ann had four children:

- Albert born 6 May 1864 - married Eliza Jennings - three children. Albert's second wife was Amelia Farthing married on 5 Dec 1993

- Edwin born 15 September 1867 - married five times 1) Martha 2) married Emily Green on 29 Jan 1891; 3) married widow Rebecca Morey Frecker on 8 Feb 1904; 4) married Caroline Lush on 15 May 1906; and 5) married Harriett Elizabeth Roberts on 24 Oct 1909 - I think he had a total of about 12 children

- Tregertha born 22 Feb 1870. She married Azariah George Mills on 10 Sept 1887. They had 13 children.

- Alberta born on 30 April 1872 - she married Philip Perry on 1 June 1901 - three children.

Frederick married Mary Ann King on 10 May 1873 (Mary Ann King and Frederick Martin were first married by layreader in N.W.Arm and then remarried By Clergy. witness James Pilgrim and William Pike. Mary Ann died on 30 Sept 1875 at the age of 34 years.


Frederick married Mary Young on 24 June 1880. (Mary Young a widow from Twillingate married Fredrick Martin of North West arm also a widower. Witness to marriage James Young). I don't know when Mary died. Frederick died on 15 September 1904.

Confusing with all the marriages.....

I have Harriet Elizabeth Roberts(b Jul 12 1885) as the 4th wife of Edwin Martin but her parents I have as James Roberts and a Caroline Unknowen. James Parents are James Roberts and Sarah Ann Moss, And Sarahs parents John Moss And Elizabeth Pearce. Was there more than one Harriet Elizabeth Roberts?

Interesting flurry of notes you have there.

Juanita Clara Roberts, daughter of Elias L. Roberts and his first wife Mary Ellen Fifield. Elias later married Rosanna Noseworthy.
Arthur Frederic Martin, son of Albert Martin and his first wife Eliza Jellings. Albert later married Amelia Ann Farthing.

Juanita's brother Josiah maried Julia Kate Martin and this ties to the Martins from Harbour Grace. Julia Kate was a daughter of John Saunders Martin and his third wife Belinda Sarah Barret.

I have been working on the various Protestant Martin lines since the beginning of 2004. Many of the Harbour Grace lines are connected and I can prove that the Martins in Port Anson, Leading Tickles, Lewisporte and Port au Port all hail from Harbour Grace. The Martins in Burlington, North West Arm are a puzzle to me and I only understand part of them because of the Harbour Grace link.

If you would care to collaborate in research I would like to understand this line more.
