Post subject:  Captain Latham and 1640s Census

I was not sure if I should post this on general or surnames. I am looking for a Newfoundland census prior to 1675. I found one on here but my ancestor was not listed.

All I have on my ancestor was that her name was "Mary." No last name and born in Newfoundland sometime in the 1640s. Her husband, Captain James Latham was born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1642 to two English parents. He was a fisherman (I think) and went to Newfoundland, where he met and married Mary about 1668. They had their first born there and then later migrated to New London, Connecticut. My ancestor, their daughter was born in New London.

Were there marriage records of any kind in Newfoundland in say the 1660s?

Anyone here happen to have James Latham in their family tree??

thanks in advance :)
Ember

Unfortunately there are no nominal Newfoundland census returns prior to the 1670s, nor are there church records for that era. Although there was a small number of permanent residents in the colony, most of the population was seasonal, travelling back and forth to Southern England.

Your ancestor was likely born on the Avalon Peninsula. There were a number of people from Charlestown and Boston who settled at Bay Bulls. I have had great luck researching at the Massachusetts State Archives in Dorchester. They have a wonderful collection of index cards created in the 1930s which cover all of the names and places named in the government records for the 1600s and 1700s. The shipping records were especially helpful.

Boston merchants went back and forth to Newfoundland to supply the settlers. Those records survive, but are scattered in several New England archives.
