Post subject:  Major

I am descended from a resident of Carbonear who married a sea captain and later went to Devon in the UK. I am pretty sure her surname was Major, probably first name Dorothy. As I am visiting Carbonear later this year I would love to find out more about her.

There was a Dorothy Sarah King Major born to a Degory William King Major and his wife Anne (nee Rumson) in Carbonear on May 21, 1841.

Is that the right era?

Degory and Anne married on February 9, 1836 in Carbonear. Samuel C. Rumson was one of the witnesses. Degory was of Portsea, Hampshire, England and Anne was from Carbonear. (Perhaps he was your Sea Captain?)

If you are going to Newfoundland, it would be worthwhile to visit the Provincial Archives in St John's. I know that for Carbonear, there are many old records at the Archives that aren't available online. A few of my family lines start in Carbonear, and I found a wealth of information there.

Regards,
Carol
