NOTES:
about (1776) September 1783- May 1784,
Jonathan Jones, Sr., ESQ. was from Saratoga, Albany co., New York.
He was appointed Captain of the Provincial co.,
and for some time was an engineer in the fortification of Quebec,
with John LEAVER, Sr., ESQ.
He was threatened with imprisonment, because he refused to bear arms with the rebels.
And lost his house on Fish Creek.
For 1 year in Quebec,
on September 1783, 2 ships: Grace and Three Sisters sailed from New York to Quebec.
On the Grace: with Cols. Cuyver, Peters, Haire, Meloney and families;
Captain Jonathan Jones, Sr. and LEAVER Families,
came to Louisburg during winter, to Spanish River, Sydney…
Captain Jonathan Jones and John LEAVER, Sr. ESQ. Military Commandment,
both made extensive explorations of the Bras d’Or Lake to Baddeck…
Were possibly Masons…

In 1816, a Lawsuit against John LEAVER, Sr. ESQ. and Misters Ritchie,
the lessees of the Mines, refused to pay a duty of a shilling per gallon on Rum.
This was imposed for revenue purposes. The grounds of their refusal were that the king relinquished his prerogative of making laws to tax the people by the proclamation of 1763 when Cape Breton was first joined to Nova Scotia
and again when the island was made a separate province.
An action was brought against Leaver and Ritchie, which went in their favour.
On appeal this decision was upheld.
All duty imposed on rum in the past was illegal.
The revenue lost was considered indispensable.
Only two courses were open.
Either convene an assembly like our sister province of Prince Edward Island
or annex to the province of Nova Scotia. The imperial ministry chose the latter.

After, when William Jones, Sr. married to Mary Leaver,
he fled in a rowboat to St. John’s, Newfoundland,
of which several LEAVER brothers, including John LEAVER, Jr. Brought him back to Baddeck…

The LEAVER Family, were Granted very much Lands of Northern Baddeck.
Looking for info. Or a picture of Land bought by John LEAVER, Sr. ESQ.,
Military Commandment of Garrison in Sydney, June 14, 1820,
called the Site of the Old Government House and Gardens,
located between North Charlotte Street, Ameila Street, Great George Street & School Street (next to the Military Ground)…
