Hello. I'm looking for information about my grandparents, Alice Brake and Abraham Gushue. They lived in Corner Brook and ran a boarding house there. I believe my grandmother was Irish and my grandfather was French. Rumor has it that he stowed away on a boat and was put ashore in Newfoundland, where he met my grandmother. They married and proceeded to have at least 11 children. Any information is much appreciated!

Abraham Gushue and Mary Alice Brake were married on 27 February 1900 at Sacred Heart Church, Curling. Abraham was the son of Francis Gushue and Maria McCarthy. Mary Alice
was the daughter of Edward Brake and Mary McCarthy.
Edward Brake of Bay of Islands wed Mary McCarthy of Carbonear on 2 July 1874 at Sacred Heart Church, Curling. He was the son of Edward Brake and Sarah Park, and Mary was the daughter of William McCarthy and Charlotte Marshall.
Francis Goujou of France and Mary McCarthy of Carbonear had a son James William born 8 November 1871 at Curling.
Francois Gushue of St. Malo, France died at Corner Brook on 23 March 1917, aged 84 years.
Abraham Gushue died at Corner Brook of pneumonia on 26 October 1944.

It is difficult to tell where they were born. Many people in the Bay of Islands moved seasonally for the fishery. Mary Alice was living at Chateau, Labrador at the time of her marriage. However the McCarthys were all Corner Brook people so there is a strong likelihood both Abraham and Mary Alice were born there.
