Hello,
Does anyone know where Bartholomew Coleman of Trinity 1800-1801 came from?

I think he came from Co. Cork, Ireland.

Edward, Thank you so much. I have thought that County Cork might be a possibility, I found two Colemans listed from Co. Cork in the Coleman file from the Keith Matthews files. They were William Coleman, who might have settled in Ferryland and a Monsignor Coleman. How do you know that Batholomew might be from Cork

Newfoundland Vital Statistics:

Bartholomew and Christian Coleman had several other children, including Edward Coleman, Sarah Coleman, Mary Coleman, Peter Sullivan Coleman, Joseph Coleman, James Coleman, and Jeremiah Coleman.

The family tradition is that Bartholomew Coleman was from Cork, and according to the
Roman Catholic baptisms his wife was Christina Rowe.

My great great grandmother was Ann Coleman who married Robert Richard Spence in 1823 in St. John's, Newfoundland. They lived in Trinity and owned a public house on The Nuddick and were merchants. Her parents were Bartholomew Coleman and Christine Sullivan (or Rowe?).

I believe Christina (Row) Coleman was named after her paternal grandmother Christina Sheppard (1713-1775). Her grandfather Edward Row Sr. (1699-1754) served as the magistrate at Trinity.

Hello,
I've found a record from the NLI (National Library of Ireland) records that shows a birth for Bartholomew Coleman in Cork City.
Daniel Coleman & Maria Murphy son Bartholomoum baptized Aug. 13, 1768 St. Mary's Church, Cork City, Cork, Diocese: Cork and Ross.
I have a relative that will be visiting Ireland: Cork and Dublin soon. Can anyone give me some advice on where to look to find more information on this record, maybe a record of Bartholomew leaving Cork for Newfoundland? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Liz

Wow, that is an exciting discovery. If only there was a way to confirm that it was the same man who went to Trinity.

Conducting research in Ireland is difficult. Most of the records are unindexed and disorganized. There weren't any passenger lists for that era, however if Bartholomew Coleman came as a servant there could be indenture papers.
