To advise anyone interested in the Thorne surname. I have submitted a Y-DNA sample to FAMILYTREEDNA and am awaiting results. I found a Thorne from the New Harbour area who were originally Thornton and obtained and submitted YDNA samples in order to be compared with mine to see if the Thorne's from Lower Island Cove who migrated to Brownsdale are related to the Thornton/Thorne's of New Harbour.
Familytreedna will also check my results with their data base to see if there are any matches. YDNA is passed only from father to son and will tell if there are any common ancestors.

This is exciting news Len, please let me know how the results pan out. I have Thorne Trinity Bay ancestry, but on my mother's side so do not have information to compare.
I have completed mt-DNA results for my mother (oldest confirmed maternal ancestor Leah Tilley b. 1815 Hant's Harbour), as well as y-DNA for my father (oldest confirmed ancestor James Bryant b. about 1785 Heart's Delight.) I have no results at this time for a close genetic connection in the Family Tree DNA database nor any of the projects we are participating in...but I keep hoping!
Taking the step of sourcing another participant is an excellent idea!
Regards Carol

Now if only a Thorn(e) from Torbay would get tested - it would really tie things together (or not).

I was notified today by familytreedna.com that the testing timeframe is 10 to 13 weeks. Will post when results received.

I received results of Y-DNA test of Thorne from New Harbour and Myself from Brownsdale Trinity Bay , originating from John Thorne of Lower Island Cove. The results showed that we are not related.
This proves that we are not related to the Thorne's/Thornton of New Harbour , Trinity Bay.

Thank you Len for letting us know the results. I just transferred my autosomal dna from Ancestry to Family Tree DNA and joined the Newfoundland project. It would be wonderful if more people tested.
The matches on My Swedish side were great and I have already had someone contact me that has broken my brick wall on my Maternal grandmonther. He just sent me all of the locations that she ever lived and when her mother died and her father re-married. It has been exciting.
We just need to get more Newfoundlander's to test! Thanks, Len Linda

Linda Yes that would be great if a Torbay THORNE would get tested. We could have the Thorne's in Newfoundland looked after. Len
