Post subject:  Peddle: Port Blandford

Hi, I am seeking info on my ggrandmother, Kathleen "Lena" Peddle who was the wife of Edgar Raymond Baker of Harry's Harbor, ND Bay.
She was born abt 1895 in Port Blandford, Bonavista Bay. I found a 1911 census which I believe includes her family: Father: Edward Mother : Leah Brothers: WJ, Andrew and Herbert Although I believe these were the proper relationships, I can't be sure because "Head" "Wife" "Son", etc are not noted. There has always been talk of native blood in this line. Kathleen refused to speak of her past until her death at age 103. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Records can be found at;
https://www.familysearch.org/

go to Browse by Location/Canada/Newfoundland

There are three "browse Images" files
Church records are RC records of North Coast
Vital records are government records mainly 1891 and later
birth/baptism 1891-1897
marriage 1891-1922
death 1891-1949
Vital Statistics are church records before 1891, not all churches are here, it
was voluntary for churches to provide records, some didn't and some records
were not put on the site.

Navigating site can be difficult.

Thanks for this!. I found record of birth for Susan Kathleen PEDDLE. Great acquisition! Here is the issue I now face. I searched for her mother, Leah HOBBS' record of birth, going by her age at the time of her marriage to Edward PEDDLE in 1892. She was 23 at that time, making her year of birth abt 1869. Searched Bonavista records, and Bingo! There she was, d/o William and Ellen HOBBS, baptized in Kiels. However, my excitement was short-lived,as I soon discovered another Leah HOBBS, baptized in the same community (Kiels) to Henry and Mary HOBBS! No parents names on my Leah's record of marriage so I am not sure which Leah HOBBS is mine. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

"Bingo", number one problem in the records, sometimes hard to tell who's who. One possiblilty, children were often named after their grandparents, either as a first or second name. Another possiblilty, child's second name same as grandmothers maiden name (ie my aunt Annabelle Hatcher Dicks), in later years this died out, thankfully, you can only have so many Charles, Henry, James, John, Mary or Elizabeth.

So true! I am leaning towards William and Ellen due to the fact that Leah's oldest son's name was William. Thanks for your help.

Stephen;

Have you read the book "Nestled between the Hills" by A. Penney. Its a story of Canning''s Cove and talks a little of Edward Peddles family and the move from Canning's Cove to Port Blandford around 1904-1908.

There are still many descendants of Edward living at Port Blandford.

Cal,
I had no idea about this book! I can't thank you enough! I will start looking for the right now.
Do you have relatives in the area?
Thanks again,

Stephen;

Yes, I live at PB. My mother was a Peddle. The Peddles of PB and those from the Bloomfield-Lethbridge area of NL all originated from Castle Cove, Bonavista Bay. I've been trying for years to find the common Peddle ancestors, without success. Thus 2 branches of Peddles at PB . My mothers ancestors are descendants of Humphry Peddle.

Cal,
I've got to tell you, I have always wished I lived in Newfoundland. It is the branch of my family tree that pulls me the most. It's really great to have a chance to talk to somebody from my great-grandmothers hometown!
I wonder if you could clarify something for me. I found a record of birth for Edward Piddle, son of John and Mary Piddle. Edward was born in Castle Cove in 1863. Was the name PIDDLE an earlier version of PEDDLE?

Also, later census records indicate that Edward was born at Keels. Are these 2 communities (Castle Cove and Keels) close enough in proximity to have used interchageably?

Thanks again, Cal

Post subject:  Re: Peddle: Port Blandford

Arrthur Penney's book on Cannings Cove suggests my assumption that Leah Hobbs' parents wewe William and Ellen was wrong. He has Henry and Mary (QUINTON) as her parents. This discovery alone was worth the price of the book!

Now it's time to start down the QUINTON trail, as well as Edward PEDDLE's parents. It looks as though John and Mary PIDDLE may have had Edward in 1863 at Castle Cove. Edward and Leah's record of marriage has Edward living in Musgravetown in 1892. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Post subject:  Re: Peddle: Port Blandford

According to "Google" Castle Cove was about 55 KM as the crow flies from Musgravetown, and he was 28 when he married, being (I assume) a fisherman, he would go were the work was and were he could sell his catch. There is no Castle Cove in the listing of settlements of Newfoundland in the Census records, so there could have been more than one or was found unsuitable for larger industry or settlement.

Are you a facebook user? Port Blandford has a facebook page entitled " Port Blandford Heritage Society". Some of your relatives are members and a pic of your Grandmothers sisters home there - Mary Leah & Theadore Keats.

Post subject:  Re: Peddle: Port Blandford

Thank you, Cal. I will check that out. I am still pursuing Edward Peddle's ancestry. I hope to find out his mother, Mary's maiden name. At least I believe John and Mary PIDDLE to be his parents. According to my father, my ggrandfather (Edgar Baker) sometimes referred to my ggrandmothet (Lena Peddle) as his "little Indian." So we have always wondered if she had any indigenous descent. I just have been unable to find John and Mary's record of marriage. So far I have no evidence of a native connection, other than the fact that Sulie Joe was the Peddle's neighbor in Cannings Cove. I'll keep digging!
Thanks again,
Steve

Hi Cal,
I ended up visiting the family at Port Blandford. It was really great! The grandson that you mention really didn't know too much about Edward's parents (although he was a wealth of info and stories of the family). I wonder if you still have the unverified info you referenced in your post. Anything warmly received.
Thanks, Cal!
