I am trying to find, Parents for and Date of Birth for, Sarah Wood of Bay Roberts . Sarah married William Brown in 1849 at Bay Roberts. She died at Bay Roberts in 1862.
There was a James Woods in the Beachy Cove area of Bay Roberts on the 1835 voters list and a James Wood witnessed Sarah Wood and William Brown's wedding in 1849, AND I found a death for James Wood in 1861 at age 63yrs. All in Bay Roberts. That is the only Wood I can find, so I'm thinking that THIS James Wood is Sarah Wood's father because upon his death in 1861 he was 63 yrs old making him born abt. 1798.

In the 1864 Hutchinsons Directory for Bay Roberts there are 4 (four) Woods listed, Charles,James,Phillip,and William and all are listed as Schooner Owner. As James Wood died in 1861, these may be his son's or brothers or some of each, Who knows? Anyway that is the last time that Wood shows up in the Directory's at Bay Roberts, I have no idea where they went or came from , but as they were schooner owners they could have gone anywhere following the fishing trade.

1. James Wood was a witness at the Marriage of Sarah Wood and William Brown in Bay Roberts on Dec. 18th, 1849.

2. James Wood of Bay Roberts died on May 23, 1861 at the age of 63 yrs.

3. James WOOD born to John & Catharine and bap Apr 7 1800 . listed in the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist (Anglican) in St. John's,NL. Baptisms 1796 -1812 Vol 26B.

4. Nov. 24, 1786 - married John Woods of Old Perlican and Catharine Ivamy dau. of John and Patience Ivamy in this district .St Paul's Marriages(Anglican) 1779 - 1808 Trinity, Trinity Bay District.

Anyone coming across these names during your research ,I would appreciate hearing from you.

Thanks
Len

Don't know if you have this or not but Elizabeth Hoods born Aug. 21, 1855, the daughter of William J. Hood and Mary Kearley (you have Woods) married John Bradbury of Bay Roberts on December 8, 1876 in Bay Roberts. Witnesses: Charles Hoods and Thomas Hoods. Minister: Rev. W. C. Shears.

John Bradbury and Elizabeth Hood(s) had a son William Hoods Bradbury born Nov. 10, 1888 in Bay Roberts and baptised Jan 04, 1888 there.

William Hoods Bradbury married Ann Maria Morgan born Mar. 19 1894 in Blow-me-down, Port de Grave. They married on Nov. 10 1916. Ann Maria Morgan died Sep. 25 1924 in Bay Roberts and is buried in St. Matthew's Cemetery in Bay Roberts.

William remarried before 1935 to a Gertrude from St. Barbe and is on the 1935 census of Beachy Cove, Bay Roberts and on the 1945 census of Bay Roberts.

Just some more confusion on the Wood and Hood surname.

John

Thanks for that bit of confusion, now here is a bit of more confusion;

I visited the Archives at the Rooms and found the following;
1. In the Bay Roberts Marriages, Church of England on Page 142, No. 57 , I found a Marriage of William Wood of Bay Roberts to Mary Kearley of Bay Roberts on May 24, 1855.

2. I found also in the Church of England Baptisms of St. Matthews Church Bay Roberts on Page 56 no. 624 baptism of Thomas of William and Mary Woods on Apr 24, 1861, with the following notation after; WILLIAM WOODS REQUESTED THAT WOOD BE CHANGED TO WOODS AS WOODS IS THE REAL NAME.

HAVE YOU SEEN THIS NOTATION?
AM I READING THIS WRONG?
COULD I BE CALLING THE H IN HOOD A ( W) ?
COULD ALL THE WOODS IN BAY ROBERTS IN THE EARLY 1800'S REALLY BE HOODS?

From what I've seen at the archives there is no mistaking the Woods for Hoods, BUT why would they put HOOD on the headstone if they were WOOD.

This is very confusing, I appreciate all help in solving this mystery.

Thanks
Len

Hi Len

I have not been to the Archives in years so I have not seen the comment about
the name change.

There was a family in Bay Roberts with the surname of Wood, they were Andrew J. Wood
and his wife was Sophia. Their headstone, newspaper article and census clearly have the surname
as Wood.

They are found on the 1921 census of Bay Roberts.

Andrew J. Wood died January 3, 1925 in Bay Roberts and his wife Sophia died in Toronto on Feb. 26, 1937 while visiting some of her children. Both are buried in the Seventh Day Adventist Cemetery in Bay Roberts.

Hi John;

Yes, I've seen that entry in the 1921 census. Andrew Wood was born in Leith , Scotland and moved to Bay Roberts from Grand Bank on the Burin Pens. I believe he is ancestor to the current mayor of Bay Roberts. I've sent email to the mayor but didn't get any response, I would guess he has more to do with his time than to reply to me on genealogy matters.

There were WOODS on the Burin Peninsula, Grand Bank in the early 1800's. I don't know if there is a connection to the Bay Roberts area or not. I would also be interested in how and why the Andrew Wood family moved to Bay Roberts and what connection they had to Bay Roberts.

I also checked the Web Site for St Matthews C of E church in Bay Roberts and emailed them to check their original records BUT again no response.

Thank you very much for your kind response to my enquiries into this mystery, I appreciate it very much.
