In the 1864 Hutchinsons Directory for Bay Roberts there are 4 (four) Woods listed, Charles,James,Phillip,and William and all are listed as Schooner Owner. Is there anyone who can give me any HISTORY on these gentlemen? as I'm looking for ancestors of SARAH WOOD of BAY ROBERTS.

Thanks in Advance

I am trying to find, Parents for and Date of Birth for, Sarah Wood of Bay Roberts . Sarah married William Brown in 1849 at Bay Roberts. She died at Bay Roberts in 1862.
There was a James Woods in the Beachy Cove area of Bay Roberts on the 1835 voters list and a James Wood witnessed Sarah Wood and William Brown's wedding in 1849, AND I found a death for James Wood in 1861 at age 63yrs. All in Bay Roberts. That is the only Wood I can find, so I'm thinking that THIS James Wood is Sarah Wood's father because upon his death in 1861 he was 63 yrs old making him born abt. 1798.

In the 1864 Hutchinsons Directory for Bay Roberts there are 4 (four) Woods listed, Charles,James,Phillip,and William and all are listed as Schooner Owner. As James Wood died in 1861, these may be his son's or brothers or some of each, Who knows? Anyway that is the last time that Wood shows up in the Directory's at Bay Roberts, I have no idea where they went or came from , but as they were schooner owners they could have gone anywhere following the fishing trade.

Anyone coming across these names during your research ,I would appreciate hearing from you.

Thanks
Len

The following are deaths recorded for Bay Roberts, NL.

James Wood died May 23, 1861 at age 63 yrs. Born abt. 1798.

Philip Woods died Aug 28, 1892 at age 56 yrs. Born Bay Roberts abt. 1836

Simon Woods died at Labrador Sept 15, 1893 at age 72 yrs. born Bay Roberts abt. 1821.

William Woods died Oct 9, 1903 at age 74 yrs. Born Bay Roberts abt. 1829.

Sarah Wood Brown died Mar 16, 1862 at age (not recorded) Born Bay Roberts.

The following Birth Recorded at Bay Roberts Anglican Records.

Charles Wood Born Feb 9, 1843, son of James and Elizabeth Wood Bay Roberts.

So, given the above, I believe that James Wood born abt.1798 is the father and Elizabeth the mother of Philip,Simon,William,Charles and Sarah . Charles being the only recorded birth I could find and there are no other "Wood" families in the area at the time other than what I have, then until I can find something to the contrary, I believe this to be the WOOD family I've been searching for.

James and Elizabeth Wood Bay Roberts

Simon born abt. 1821
Sarah born abt 1820's
William born abt. 1829
Philip born abt. 1836
Charles born Feb 9, 1843

I know there is some confusion on the surname Hood, Hoods, Wood, or Woods.
Here are what some of the headstones say of names you mentioned above.
Pillar in cemetery has Mary on one side and William on the other.
William's side reads...

Thank you for that information, I appreciate it very much. Yesterday I took a trip to the Registry of Deeds ,Govt. of Newfoundland and Labrador to see if I could find any land transactions for Hood or Wood in the Bay Roberts area. I found the following;

Recorded in the Deaths of 1902 - 1906 on Line 21 Page 172 in Vol. 4 I found the following;

Died on Oct. 9th, 1903 at Bay Roberts of Heart Failure, William Woods age 74 yrs, Master Mariner born at Bay Roberts.

Here is the link;

Found the following in the Bay Roberts Church of England Marriages;

24 May 1850 William Wood of Bay Roberts married Mary Kearley of Bay Roberts.

Also the following Burials at Bay Roberts;

5 May 1885 Mary wife of William Woods died at age 53 yrs.

This is a very close match to that PILLAR in the cemetary at Bay Roberts. I am wondering if there is a photo of that pillar anywhere on this site?

Thanks
Len

I visited the Provincial Archives at The Rooms in St. John's NL. I viewed Photocopies of ORIGINAL CHURCH RECORDS for St Matthews Church Anglican , Bay Roberts.
I have found that my suspicion was right. All the HOOD listings should be WOOD/ WOODS. The following are corrections which I have verified today.

On Page 6 there is a listing for Thomas of William and Mary HOOD, It should be and is WOODS. this can be verified in the C/E Bay Roberts 1848 - 1870 Baptisms page 56 #624. There is a note after this which reads Mr. William Woods requested WOOD be changed to WOODS as WOODS is the proper name. signed by Rev. Shears.

I will list the following Pages from NGB site first and the correct name with Church Record Page and Number Last.

NGB Page 17, Sarah Jane of William and Mary Woods Church Record Page 72 # 796.

NGB P. 12, Isaac of Philip and Jemima Woods, Church Record P. 66 # 727.

NGB P. 29, Mary Ann of William and Mary Woods Church Record P. 90 # 995.

NGB P. 39, William James of William and Mary Woods , Church Record P. 107 # 1142.

NGB P.46, Sarah Fanny of Simon and Elizabeth Woods. Church Record BOX 1 1837 - 1870.

NGB P. 61, Susanna of Simon and Elizabeth Woods, Church Record Box 1, 1838 - 1870.

The following are WOODS taken from Church Records which is not yet listed in NGB Site.

Charles son of James and Elizabeth Wood born 09 Feb 1843 from C of E Baptisms Bay Roberts 1837 - 1848 Box 1.
Elizabeth of William and Mary Woods born 21 Aug 1855, BOX 1 Also.
Robert son of William and Mary Woods born 18 May 1858, Box 1.

The following taken from Box 1 C of E Church Records Bay Roberts Burials;

16 Dec 1838 James Woods Bay Roberts.

23 May 1861 Burial of James Wood age 63 yrs Church Record Page 239 # 235.

Burial of Sarah Jane of William and Mary Woods age 3 yrs 3 Mths on 7 Jan 1867.
Burial of Mary Ann of William and Mary Woods age 15 mths on 7 Jan 1867. Church Record Page 250 # 386 and 387.

The following Marriages also not yet on NGB site;

24 May 1855 William Wood and Mary Kearley of Bay Roberts Church Records Page 142 # 57, C of E marriages Bay Roberts.

09 Dec 1858 Philip Wood and Jemima Badcock of Bay Roberts C of E Church Records Page 162 # 115, Bay Roberts St. Matthews Anglican Church.

I am suspecting that the WOODS surname got changed in translation due to dialect to HOODS.I may be wrong on this but I can't come up with any reasonable explanation as to why in the earlier years it was WOODS and then in the later years some who were WOODS became HOODS, i.e William Woods and Mary, married as WOODS but buried as HOODS. William WOODS was definately in Bay Roberts in 1855 as per Land Records and also in Hearts Content in 1846 and 1847.
I've found many examples during my research whereby names have been changed several times due to dialect and the writing down,by the clergy, what they think they hear.
I can't think of any other explanation other than there were actually HOODS and WOODS in Bay Roberts at that time.
If anyone knows anything different then I would appreciate the help in this matter.

As a result of a visit to Provincial Archives today, March 17, 2016, I found the following in the Voters Lists for Bay Roberts;

1874, 1878, 1882 years show the following;
William Woods
Philip Woods
Simon Woods
Charles Woods

1878 and 1882 show the above plus Robert of William Woods.

1855 and 1858 only show James Woods.

Then the following shows that Woods change to Hood;
There is another Voters List without a date, but wrote in ink 1889 or 1885 ? that show the following;

William Hood age 58 of James lives at Beachy Cove
Philip Hood age 55 of James Lives at Beachy Cove Fisherman
Simon Hood age 55 of James lives at Spaniards Bay Pond Fisherman
Thomas Hood age 25 of William lives at Beachy Cove Captain of Banker
Robert Hood age 31 of William lives at Beachy Cove Fisherman
Charles Hood age 28 of Philip lives at Beachy Cove Fisherman

Is there anyone who can clarify or explain this change?

If Thomas Hood was a Captain of a Banker then there should be a record somewhere.
