I was reading a couple of articles and was surprised to find that some of the original draft of the first 400 of the Royal (Newfoundland) Artillery became part of the commando units fighting in the Mediterranean. According to an article on Aiden Abbott, 70% of the unit applied but only 5 successfully made it through and were accepted. Members of the first 400 Royal Artillery Draft - 57th (Newfoundland) Heavy Regiment Royal Artillery Also Served with the Special Service Battalion 11 (Scottish) Commando Troop 1 Abbott, Aiden Alphonsus 970064 St.John's Holden, Thomas Talbert "Bert" "Trapper" 970131 St.John's Kearney, Joseph F. 970050 St.John's Wood, Henry Robert Noel 970158 St.John's Reynolds, John Allenby "Jack" 970558 Corner Brook The 11th was not brought back up to strength after one particularly heavy operation (Battle of the Litani River) in which they suffered about 25% casualties. The unit was disbanded and folded into other units. |
