Here is an interesting link for an Ireland-based commercial genetic genealogy testing company called Ireland DNA that offers atDNA (autosomal) testing to the general public:

http://www.dnaireland.ie/dna-origins/

The company presents an interesting research question, with a not-so-obvious answer that may surprise some: “If you’re Irish, you might expect to be 100% European? Well the data gathered so far suggests that only about 4% of the Irish population have “pure” 100% European DNA. Could this part of the Irish population be remnants of our Celtic forefathers? This European population is also represented by populations in the Middle East and South Asia.”

Like other popular commercial genetic genealogy testing companies Ireland DNA analyzes AIMs (Ancestry Informative Markers) to calculate percentages of predicted ancient biogeogrpahic ethnic origins, excerpted as follows.

“The DNA Origins test looks at the four founding populations. That is:”

· European including Middle Easterner and South Asians
· Sub-Saharan African
· East Asian including Japanese, Chinese, Korean and Pacific Islanders
· Indigenous American including North, South and Central Native Americans

This is a fascinating and interesting genetic genealogy website for anyone interesting ijn exploring their Irish ancestry or background from an genetic genealogy perspective-highly recommended.

For any dedicated genetic genealogist with an attested and/or proven connection to the British Isles (Ireland & Great Britain) through either paper trail archival genealogy and/or direct-to-consumer, commercial genetic genealogy testing (ie., British Isles or Ireland & Great Britain biogeographic ethnic origin), a new direct-to-consumer genetic genealogy testing company called Living DNA (https://www.livingdna.com/en-ca) claims to break down a test participant's Britsh Isles biogeographic ethnic component percentages according to specific counties within the British Isles. Rather than lumping British Isles (Ireland & Great Britain) into one single reference population it goes one step further and gives an estimated or approximate percentage from each district within the British Isles. As an example this test claims to break down one's biogeographic ethnic origin percentages into Wales, Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Yorkshire,....All questions aside on estimating biogeographic ethnic origin percentages within the British Isles aside, this seems to be an interesting product vendor for anyone interested in exploring their British Isles ancestry one step further. This commercial genetic genealogy testing company reportedly tests app. 670,000 AIM SNPS with a population reference panel of app. 80.0 worldwide reference populations-with 21 from the British Isles alone. As "a new kid on the block" of direct-to-consumer ancestry testing this vendor is recommended by Eurogenes Ancestry Project and is worthy of further investigative research and follow-up test participant feedback.
