"SIC" after a word or name means to show that the word is quoted exactly as it stands in the original.

Usually means that what was written didn't look right to the transcriber, either because it didn't match something else, or didn't look right. For example if you saw "Jonson" and suspected that it should be "Johnson" you might put sic (which is Latin for "thus").

Good morning
We use the expression as an editing note. Our use of it signifies that although the entry may not appear to be correct, it is as it was written in the original document by the clergy/enumerators. We attempt to reproduce all information as it was found in the original document without editing. You will see the use of a (?) when the transcriber was not able to make out the handwriting on the original document. Let us know if you can provide information that will clear up any of these (?) entries.
