Newfoundland's Grand Banks Message Board

Has anyone requested service records from the British Ministry of Defence? My grandfather served in the British navy during WWII and died while serving. I know I can send a request to the MOD for a copy of his service records but was wondering what information they would contain. My mother is in her 80s and would like to know exactly how he died. Would his service records describe that? There are conflicting family stories that include an exploding mine (he was stationed on a minesweeper) and his hospital being bombed.
Any help to track down the truth would be appreciated.
