In browsing the 1900 census for Chelsea MA page by page, looking for some ancestors from Newfoundland, I discovered that the enumerators used "Canada (Eng)" instead of Newfoundland. Where an enumerator had entered "Newfoundland", e.g, as place of birth, it was crossed out by someone else and "Canada (Eng)" written above it. I find this curious as Newfoundland was of course not part of Canada at the time. Not sure why the American enumerators would do this. Worth knowing if you are searching as "Canada (Eng)" could mean Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, PEI, Ontario, etc. Canada (Fr) was used mostly for those with French surnames, i.e., most likely from Quebec.

GW,
I found the same thing on my father's records and Grandfather's.....it is just that they use
US or Canada or another country's name instead of individual districts or islands..I guess it
makes it easier for them to figure out the totals for census records....otherwise I can't think
of any other reason to do this....but I have tried to put in Freshwater, NFLD or just Newfoudland, and it won't take it...you have to put in canada.

By the time these records were computerized, Newfoundland was already part of Canada so my guess is that they either didn't know it was ever a separate country, or it was just simpler to ignore that fact. Eileen
