Hi folks, I’ve enjoyed researching information on your website and especially the district photos. Hoping someone can help with a couple of queries.
(1) In the photos for Burgeo-La Poile district, there are 2 photos in Grand Bruit entitled a) skiff being “hauled down” and b) skiffs drying sails. These are very large for skiffs, although the hull forms seem to lie between skiff and schooner. Are these possibly ‘jack boats’, jack schooners, or descended from the ‘western boat’, both forms being common on the south coast in 1800s. Would anyone have any info related to this?
(2) In the Bonavista district, there is a photo at Princeton titled ‘men working skiffs’. Does anyone know what is happening there…are they trying to drive herring or whales with their sculling oars?
Thanks for any help or comments.
Gordon
