Newfoundland's Grand Banks Message Board

I have an ancestor, Joseph Ferry, who is listed in church records, as well as a newspaper article, as from Jersey. Am I to take this as Channel Islands, Jersey, or Jersey Harbour, Newfoundland? He settled in St. John's with his wife, but on their marriage record it states, widower, Jersey. This was in 1881, if that matters.
