At the risk of showing my ignorance, am searching for Family on Grand Banks Website & came across 1800-01 Census for Fishing Rooms. Would someone be kind enough to explain to me what these were

From website: http://www.heritage.nf.ca/glossary.html#F" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
"Fishing room
The waterfront area from which a fishery was conducted, including all necessary facilities."

These 'facilities' included landing, drying and curing facilities.... wharves, fish flakes, sheds, etc.

In the 1700s a "Room" came to refer to a shore premises of a ship, merchant, planter, or fisherman.

So... for example, Tom White's Room.... would refer to waterfront property which belonged to Tom White.
