Hello Everyone,

I am trying to get information on my maternal grandmother, Mary (Lane) Martin-Charade, from Kings Cove, NL. My grandmother was born in Kings Cove on April 18th, 1907 to Mary Lane and William Martin. My grandmother had two sisters Katherine (Martin) Walsh, Ann (Martin) Griffith, and a brother, Jeremiah Martin.

I would appreciate any information or suggestions that anyone could offer on how best to research my family genealogy in the Kings Cove area. Thank you so much.

Very Respectfully,

Len,

I went to the site that you suggested. However, the only vital statistics available seem to be birth/marriage records for the Church of England. My family were Roman Catholic.

Thanks for your help. If you can think of any other sources for me to find information on the William Martin/Mary Lane Family from Kings Cove, please let me know.

Stephen

Site of interest;

It appears that the RC Basilica in St. John's may have records for Kings Cove.

Here is a death record for a William Martin of Kings Cove age 59yrs in 1916;
Jan 17 1916 Kings Cove William Martin 59 Influenza Kings Cove Kings Cove RC

The following site has a William Martin born 1857. May be the William you're looking for.

Thanks Len,

I believe that William Martin, born Sept. 26, 1857, to Michael Martin and Catherine Sullivan, is the youngest child of nine children, born of my great great grandparents Michael Martin and Catherine Sullivan. I found out through the RC Diocese in NL that they were married on or about October 14th, 1899 by the Rev. T.E. Lynch in Kings Cove.

If that is in fact the case, then I will now try to figure out who Michael Martin and Catherine Sullivan-Martins' parents were-and anything else I can find out about them. What would be the best source of information to find this out?

The following Martins were the children of Michael Martin and Catherine Sullivan.

-1839 Jeremiah of Michael Martin and Catherine Sullivan. Witnesses: Patrick Sullivan. and Elizabeth Martin.

-1840 Oct 8, James of Michael Martin and Catherine Sullivan. Witnesses: Jerimiah Sullivan and Johanna Martin

-1842 Nov 15 Elizabeth of Michael Martin and Catherine Sullivan.

-1844 Mary of Michael Martin and Catherine Sullivan. Witnesses: John Sullivan and Catherine Ryan.

-1847 Jan 19, Mary of Michael Martin and Catherine Sullivan. Witnesses: John Holloway and Betsy Ryan.

-1849 Catherine of Michael Martin and Catherine Sullivan. Witnesses: David Sullivan and Catherine Martin.

-1852 Oct 3, Johanna of Michael Martin and Catherine Sullivan. Witnesses: William Carrol and Betsy Martin.

-1855 April 3, Margaret of Michael Martin and Catherine Sullivan.

-1857 Sept 26, William of Michael Martin and Catherine Sullivan. Witnesses: James Sullivan and Mary Martin.

Please let me know if you discover any further information about my Martin-Lane family in Kings Cove. I really appreciate all your help!

Thank you so much.

Stephen

Len,

This is what I came up with for Catherine Sullivan from the web site you provided:

1817 Catherine of John Sullivan and Elinor Flynn. Witnesses: John Sullivan and Eleanor Walsh.
1817 May 22, Catherine of Jeremiah Sullivan and Elizabeth Monks. Witnesses: Thomas Murphy and Hanna Monks.

Any thoughts on how I can determine which Catherine Sullivan is my great great grandmother? I guess if I could find a marriage record of Michael Martin and Catherine Sullivan it would give me both of their dates of births and perhaps even list who their parents were?

I didn't see any birth/baptismal records for Michael Martin though. Any thoughts on why his birth record wasn't listed, or, where I might continue my search for him?

I am still interested in pursuing the Mary Lane side of my family as well. My grandmother's mother was Mary Lane from Kings Cove. I know she died very young, as my grandmother, Mary (Martin-Lane) Charade, told me that both of her parents had died by the time she was fourteen.

Thanks so much. I appreciate all your help.
Stephen

The only suggestion I have is that you make contact with
http://www.therooms.ca/archives/

To see if there is any way someone can look up the records contained in the following.

King’s Cove Roman Catholic
Boxes 1, 2, & 3

There may be info contained there that is not on this site.

Good Luck.
