Hi!
My name is Joelle and I am in Mississauga (just west of Toronto) but I am originally from the Montreal area. For the most part, I have been pretty lucky with my research and have found a few gems in the research but I also have a few brick walls. (Don't we all?!)
I am stuck on my maternal grandmother's grandparents. They are William Hope (1842-1904) and Jane (or Jean - possibly Mary Jane/Jean) Fowler (b. 1851-ish). I'm not sure of the birth dates because I am doing the math backwards from the census info but it seems that whoever spoke to the census taker was never quite sure how old everyone was.
Anyhow, according to the census, they had most of their kids in Newfoundland - Henry (1874), William (1877), James (1879), Mary Ann (1881) and John Patrick (1883). My gr-grandmother (Lizzie) and her other sisters came along after they moved to Montreal.
Finally, I can't find a death record for Jane Fowler in Montreal so I am also wondering if she went back to Newfoundland after her kids were older to live with maybe a sister or something.
I suspect one or more of them may have come from St. John's but then I got a DNA hit with someone who has Fowler in their family tree and their Fowler comes from Brigus...?
Any and all help with figuring this out and maybe taking it a bit further back is most welcome!!
Thanks and I'm happy to connect with this community!
Joelle
