I am a new user and am hoping someone may be able to help me with my fathers ancestors and where they might be from or to hear from a real blood cousin or relative would be amazing. I've been trying at times to get some leads but mostly keep hitting closed doors.
This is what I know: My father Edgar Thomas Best was born in 1912 in Merasheen, Placentia Bay. He was the second youngest of six children. Thomas, Amelius, Loretta, Hannah, Edgar, Ronald. His parents were Sylvester Best born 1870 and his mother Margaret born 1876 both in Merasheen.
My father spent some time in an orphanage in St Johns, but I have no idea which orphanage, I believe with some other siblings and can't seem to come up with any information.
He was in the navy overseas during WW2 discharged with TB to a sanitorium in Scotland and subsequently lost a lung. His brother Ronald also came to live in Scotland where he died around 1970.
He remained in Scotland, which is where I was born, and married my mother. He died there in 1966 before I could ask any of these questions. I now live in Alberta.
No matter how small, if anyone thinks of anything that would help me in this quest I would really appreciate it.
I am finally going to visit Newfoundland this October and hope while there to find out more.
