Hi, Just signed up here though I have been prowling the site for info over the years. I am interested in the Gulliford family from Hants Harbour. Would like to trace them back as far as I can, and hopefully back to England (maybe)

This is the site for the 1945 Census of Hant's Harbor....there are many, many Gulliford's listed
there and I'm sure some are of your family....there are other sites too, which I will put up here.
It would help too if some of the names you are looking for were given, marriages, etc. but check this out as the list is long.

SGulliford, This site below talks about the fine fishing vessels in NFLD, and particularly Hant's Harbor, including as it says below the very fine ships build under the master hand of Joseph Gulliford. Perhaps this is the same Joseph who is married to Amelia below and had so many children. Happy hunting!

I recall seeing as many as five schooners built in the dock in one winter, and very fine ships they all turned out to be, built under the master hand of Joseph Gulliford.

Thank you! I have gotten back to the Early 1800's quite quickly, working on the tree is slow going but the site has been hugely helpful. That said, I am now stuck on the first named Gulliford I can find:
William Gulliford who married Elizabeth Short in 1821 seems to be the first (last) known descendent- from what I can find, William's parents are unknown, or unnamed in any literature on the NGB site. I have found elsewhere online that his mother is likely a Cashman, and his father possibly the first Gulliford to set foot in Hants Harbour area directly from Bath England.

Any advice how to get further back?

Thank you! Most of the info doesn't go far enough back either, at least that I can find yet, though I did discover birth records of 3 previously unlisted members back to 1822, 1824 and 1826 that I knew approx birth years but no record on the NGB site, so that was great!

I am growing more and more convinced that the first Gulliford that came here was William (the first as I refer to him)- and I suspect he came alone as a young man in either late 1700 or very early 1800's from England- From deduction, he married Elizabeth Short of Hants Harbour in 1821 and I would hazard a guess he would have been between the ages of 18 and 25 which would put his birth approx 1796 to 1807. I can find no references at all in the Grand banks literature nor online elsewhere mentioning any Gulliford prior to this marriage to Elizabeth Short in 1821- both Methodists. All the information I can find, including diaries and other historical resources including diaries of fishery related start post 1821- birth records from any parishes have no other Gullifords listed near the date of his marriage and subsequent children, as well there are no other Gulliford offspring listed anywhere before his children started to reproduce- so I'm assuming no male siblings came with him to start families there. His occupation in several publications list him as a planter, which I learned is a settler that made his living off the inshore fishing vs migratory fisherman that would leave back to England. I suspect, given the later recorded ship building of the family that William came as a servant or apprentice to one of the existing Planters already established.

I started looking at English records trying to find a familial link but holy are there ever a lot of them, all with same names etc! I don't have the slightest clue where to start there. Trying to see if I can locate any immigration paperwork, or fisheries info, passenger manifests etc to find the family name. I am going to start searching for families of the same names since it seems back then names were reused within families.

Any advice on how to get back to immigration from England? It was suggested he was from Bath, and was a singer there- but could be mistaken info.
