Hi everyone , i wonder if you can shed some light on a few things ..my great grandfather john coward left greenspond in mid 1885 , story goes he had an argument with his uncle and set sailed for a new life acrosss the pond...all i know is that he had a brother called darious and another brother called allan.....i would be interested in knowing the other siblings names and also johns parents birth dates names etc ..

Darius Coward was born 21 September 1880 at Greenspond to Joshua and Ellen Coward. Other children include Alfreda b. 1876, Arthur b. 1878, Henry b. 1884 and Joshua Allan b. 1887. Supposedly there were other children but those are the only ones I've found birth records for so far. Joshua had another wife Susan Stratton who he married in 1866 and they had at least one child a daughter Jane. Ellen is also supposed to have been a Stratton but I have not seen a record for this marriage just baptismal records for their children and census records that list Ellen as Darius, Henry and Allen's mother.
Joshua was born in 1839, the son of Henry Coward and Anne Cheater. I don't know where Henry came from but Anne is supposedly the daughter of James Cheater and his first wife Martha. I am a descendant of James' son George.
Don't know anything about John I'm afraid but would love to hear any other family stories you have about him. Always nice to hear more family history.

the 1921 census shows one Coward surname

I've gone through the Bonavista District, Greenspond C of E (1814-1892) and the Greenspond Methodist (1862-1892) church records and I've found;
Henry Coward and Anne Chater married 28 Oct 1830 C of E
children;
James born 8 Dec 1831
John born 30 June 1833

John Stratton and Jane Allen married 11 Oct 1825 C of E

I can't say if everyone connects, I can't find anything for Joshua between Jane 1868 and Alfreda 1876, maybe they moved to a different district or a parish in Bonavista were the records are not online and came back to Greenspond. I did check the other church records available in Bonavista for children and a marriage for Joshua, nothing.
I would expect John to be born about 1870 which would make him 15 when he left, if he is a child of Joshua and Susan or Joshua and Ellen is anyones guess. The brothers match for Joshua and Ellen but he could be a 1/2 brother.
