Nothing like having grandkiddies to provide the push to start collecting and documenting the family history. The Greats and Grands were gone before I was born except one, who died when I was a kid, but I've let all the Uncles & most of the Aunts slip away without asking the crucial questions, which of course I now sincerely regret. A couple of house fires along the timeline apparently did away with most if not all of the early family-held records and photos. So I know I'll be asking for help.
I'll post specifics in other forum areas, but just to introduce one part of my ancestry
, the surnames in Newfoundland (all Roman Catholic):
McCarthy - Merasheen Island & Fortune Bay area
Hickey - 2 separate branches, one mostly in Ireland I think
Drake - only one that I know of, Mary Ann - born in Scotland, who married 2xGreat Hickey
Emberly - some relatives and official documents spell it "ey"
Vaters - possibly Vater, no source data
