Photo of my grandmother, Hilda May Josephine Nichols (age 10) with her
mother, born in St. Johns Newfoundland, 1896. I am hoping someone might
be able to identify my great grandmother in the photo. I only know her name
was Mary and she was married to a J. Nichols (James I believe). He was
a printer in St. Johns, and the story goes that he owned a newspaper there.
Upon his death, a brother took over the printing business and eventually
it was sold out of the family. It is also my understanding that the Nichols
family were related to the family name of Judge. As a child I found an
old silver loving cup inscribed with the owners name Judge on it and
the name of the winning horse, Minerva. This was awarded from
the Newfoundland Horsemans Association. I have no idea
if this association exists today?
